Many people think that consuming lemons could help balance their pH levels, but is it really that simple? In our everyday life we use lemons for different purposes. Some people use them in culinary for lemon pies and pastries. Others are using them as a part of a healthier lifestyle. For example, in salad dressings, as freshly squeezed juice or simply adding them into their water. Even pharmaceutical sector is adding lemon flavor and aroma to some medicines to make them more pleasant.

Alkalizing Properties of Lemons – Do They Help Balance pH?

As a part of the citrus fruits family, these yellow and sour fruits can be very beneficial for our health. Almost every person is squeezing fresh lemon juice into their tea or water for a healthier start to the day. Furthermore, a lot of people think that consuming lemons in any form can help deal with the flu. Many people worldwide consider it one of the healthiest drinks, because of its alkalizing properties and potential disease-fighting effect. Of course, another huge benefit is the fact that lemons are a source of vitamin C. Some people believe that alkalizing food can lower the body’s pH. This then would help promote overall health and prevent sickness.

Because of their high containment of citric acid, lemons have an acidic pH and are assumed to be alkalizing. The pH scale range is from 0-14, 7 being neutral, under 7 acidic and over 7 alkaline. The optimum pH level for your body is 7,2 – 7,4. Lemon’s pH is between 2 and 3, which means it can be up to 100 000 times more acidic than water. When lemons are digested and metabolized, the juice in them produces alkaline sub products in your body.  This is what makes your urine more alkaline. Thist is the reason why many people think that consuming lemons can have an overall alkalizing effect on their bodies. However, lemon juice may alkalize your urine but not your blood.

What are the Benefits of Consuming Lemons?

When the citric acid is metabolize and brakes down it leaves an alkaline residue. This acid is not so strong and can’t create a long lasting acidic load in the body. This is due to the fact that once it’s broken down, citric acid produces bicarbonates that are alkaline. Also the mineral content in lemons is high in minerals such as magnesium, calcium and potassium. Among their other benefits those minerals have an alkalizing effect on the body fluids. That effect can help for neutralizing acid waste and to lead to an overall balance. On other hand reduction of acidic waste and the nutrients in lemons contribute to better liver function, which takes a major role in detoxification and assist in reducing the buildup of metabolic waste—some of which can be acidic.

In fact you can balance your pH by drinking lemon water. Regardless lemons do not affect the blood pH directly; the urine one can be influenced. This mirrors and alkalizing effect that can contribute to balance out a dietary acid loads from other sources like processed foods and meat. Drinking warm lemon juice after a heavy meal can aid in digestion and even help you for better sleep if drank after dinner. You can drink it on daily bases just be careful with it and preferably use a stray as the acid may disturb your teeth enamel. Rinse your mouth with plenty of water after drinking lemon fresh. In conclusion while lemons start off as acidic, they contribute to alkalizing effects in the body, promoting pH balance and aiding in metabolic health.
