This year upon an accident one of my neighbors got an infection, and my father caught gastroenteritis. Both were administered Amoxicillin and the infections healed fast. Amoxicillin is one of the most used antibiotics worldwide. It kills many bacteria by destroying the mechanism of cell wall synthesis.
When to use the antibiotic Amoxicillin?
The broadband antibiotic Amoxicillin has a wide spectrum. It has an antibacterial effect on many sorts of bacteria and therefore is often used to treat infections that are caused by unknown microorganisms. The bactericidal effect is known for Streptococcus species, Listeria, and Enterococcus spp. The drug is also effective against Haemophilus influenzae, certain Escherichia coli strains, Actinomyces spp., Clostridium, Salmonella, and Shigella species, as well as Corynebacteria.
Therefore, Amoxicillin is used to treat:
- Infections of the ear that are caused by bacteria.
- Acute bacterial sinusitis (That’s an upper respiratory tract infection.)
- Pneumonia is caused by bacteria. (That are lower respiratory tract infections.)
- Gastritis caused by Helicobacter pylori
- Bacterial skin infections
- Infections of the urogenital tract by bacteria
- Structural infections like bacterial infections of prosthetic joints

How to use Amoxicillin?
The antibiotic amoxicillin is prescription-only in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. You can get it from pharmacies with a doctor’s prescription. It is available in several forms: as a powder for oral suspension, as tablets, and as an injection.
Amoxicillin is usually administered three times a day. The tablets and suspension should be taken orally at the beginning of a meal as this promotes gastrointestinal tolerance and absorption. One can combine Amoxicillin with any food and even with alcohol. Injections are administered by a doctor. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic drug, that must be taken according to the subscription made by the doctor. Mostly one package is subscribed to patients and must be used until the end even if symptoms stopped earlier. The reason is that resistant bacteria can occur and survive. The doctor gives the subscription in the way that at best all bacteria are killed.
What happens if someone forgets to take a dose? Then, the missed dose must be skipped, and the forgotten dose taken at the end of your treatment.
Who can use the antibiotic Amoxicillin?
Amoxicillin can be safely used generally at all ages. However, Amoxicillin should not be used if the person is hypersensitive to penicillin. Amoxicillin is also safe for children and for females who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Still, one should be aware of side effects like diarrhea, candidiasis, and/or a skin rash. In this case, children must contact the doctor and mothers stop breastfeeding.
