Recently in our section about Supplements, we paid attention to the bioflavonoids. There are mentioned all citrus bioflavonoids, including hesperidin. In this article he is the main hero, so let’s take a deeper look at its benefits and uses.

What is Hesperidin?

It is a flavone glycoside from the flavones hesperetin and the disaccharide rutinose. As it is extracted from the peels of tangerines, lemons, grapefruits and sweet oranges – hesperidin belongs to the group of citrus flavonoids, especially the bioflavonoids. Moreover, hesperidin is famous for being used as an herbal medicine for a long time. People can find and take in different forms such as food supplements, pills, tablets or powder. Hesperidin is supposed to provide a variety of health benefits.

What are the health benefits of Hesperidin?

Some research on the effects of that bioflavonoid is quitelimited. However, there are several studies that prove that hesperidin canoffer specific health benefits.

Hemorrhoids:

There are studies pointing out that taking hesperidin in combination with diosmin (another citrus bioflavonoid), reduces the symptoms and relieves the pain. Also may prevent hemorrhoids from coming back, so consider it good prevention.

Chronic venous insufficiency or CVI:

It is said that the combo of hesperidin, vitamin C, and butcher’s broom, taken by mouth – can relieve the symptoms of poor circulationin the legs. Some products that contain hesperidin are very useful for people who suffer from leg sores caused by poor blood circulation or saidotherwise – venous leg ulcers.

Heart Health:

According to some studies, regular hesperidin intake may boost blood vessel function and lower blood pressure.

Other health conditions that are positively affected by citrus bioflavonoids intake: are cognitive health, hay fever, hot flashes, allergies, and premenstrual syndrome. It is also said that hesperidin can improvecirculation, decrease inflammation, and is often used for oral health.

As with every supplement, especially if overdosed – it may have some unpleasant side effects. Food supplements that contain hesperidin are not recommended and are safe for people who are taking some medications. They include blood pressure drugs, calcium channel blockers, anticoagulants, medications moved by pumps in cells, also sedatives. Be aware that it may slow bloodclotting and higher the risk of bleeding.

NOTE: Taking hesperidin by mouth must not be more than 6 months. It is said that consuming it for six months is possibly safe. However, there is not so much information to confirm that more than 6 months of intake isharmless. If you experience any of the following side effects: headache, diarrhea, upset stomach, or pain, while taking it – talk with your doctor. In any case before deciding to take food supplements – always consult your doctor or nutritionist.
