There are a lot of superfoods around the world, and Kakadu plum is one of them. Kakadu plum is native to Australia and is commonly found in tropical woodlands. Aboriginal people in Australia have been eating and harvesting Kakadu plum for thousands of years. It is also famous for its medicinal properties among them.

The Kakadu plum has a high concentration of vitamin C from any plant. As per Wikipedia, Kakadu plum has recorded concentrations of 2300–3150 mg/100 g wet weight and occasionally as high as 5300 mg/100 g compared with 50 mg/100 g for oranges, making it among the highest known of any natural source (Factors that affect the vitamin C contents of citrus fruits include, production factors and climate conditions, maturity state and position on the tree, type of fruits (species and variety), handling and storage, type of container). Just one plum packs 481 mg of vitamin C, which is 530% of the DV (Daily Value).

Chemicals in the Kakadu plum have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Did you know the Kakadu plum has five times higher anti-oxidant capability than the blueberry?

Antioxidants in our diet may reduce or prevent the risk of so many diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, autoimmune and cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. Antioxidants scavenge free radicals from the body cells and prevent or reduce the damage caused by oxidation. The fruit also contains vitamin E, lutein (a compound for eye health and wellbeing), folate, zinc, magnesium, and calcium.

Why is Vitamin C so important?

Vitamin C is an essential dietary component for the human body along with Vitamin A, Vitamin B, Vitamin D, & Vitamin K.  Do you know why the demand for vitamin C skyrocketed during Covid-19? As there were no vaccines or medicines available on the market, most people were looking for ways to strengthen their immunity.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and strengthens our immune system cells. Vitamin C can neutralize free radicals (reactive chemicals that have the potential to harm cells) and help prevent or overturn cellular damage caused by these compounds. In numerous animal studies, it has been found that vitamin C has prevented and alleviated various viral and bacterial infections.

Availability of Kakadu plum

After getting Kakadu Plum "the superfood status", its demand in the global market has increased tremendously. It is the best alternative to Vitamin C supplementation as it is available in the market in powder form without any added chemicals. Kakadu plum is largely used as an ingredient in jams, sauces, and juices. It is also available in fresh, powdered, or frozen pure form.
