Honeybush tea is a healthy gift from nature that improves our health! We all know that since ancient times spices, herbs and teas have been the basic methods for the treatment of various diseases. Nowadays modern medicine provides us with a variety of pills, syrups, and medications. Still, the most harmless way to take care of your health condition is to seek help from nature. Of course, teas and herbs cannot cure everything – always consult your doctor, especially if your condition is serious and requires special treatment. And yet they are a good way to boost the immune system and warm ourselves up during the cold seasons. Not to mention that some teas are full of antioxidants – like the Honeybush tea, which is a very healthy beverage.
Where does this healthy gift come from?
Its home country is South Africa but it has become more internationally available since the late 90s. When you hear its name, you imagine honey and bushes. However, this tea actually comes from the Cyclopia plant.
Honeybush tea is a shrub herb that grows only in the mountains and coastal areas of Eastern and Western areas of South Africa. So far there are more than 21 species of the plant. Even so, the tea industry is using only a few of them to produce delicious tea. The name comes from the smell of its yellow flowers as they smell like honey. There is a close relation to red bush and rooibos teas. Its taste is similar to theirs, but honeybush tea is sweeter than theirs. People are often blending both teas – honeybush, and rooibos.
What does honeybush tea taste like?
Tea lovers say its taste is similar to honey, slightly roasted and with a pinch of a floral nuance. Although most people compare it to rooibos tea, which has a bit of medicinal taste. Honeybush is fuller-bodied and sweeter, it has a very delicate and refreshing flavor. Of course, it depends on the way you brew it at home and on the tea leaves you buy. It is best to buy loose honeybush tea, but in case you do not have access to that kind, teabags are also an option.
What are the benefits of consuming honeybush tea and how does it improve our health?
It is a good source of major phenolic compounds (generally distributed phytochemicals found in most plant tissues, including fruits and vegetables) and antioxidants. As you know those compounds are of big importance for our immune system – they protect it from oxidative stress. They also modulate the immune system and boost the body’s natural defenses against infections.
As it is mentioned above - that gift from nature contains antioxidants such as flavanones and xanthones. They protect the cells from damage. Despite the fact honeybush does not have many nutrients, it has a satisfactory amount of manganese, sodium, copper, magnesium, zinc, calcium, potassium, iron.
Thanks to the phenolic compounds, drinking honeybush tea reduces inflammation and protects the organism from the development of chronic inflammatory disease. This makes honeybush tea a very suitable drink during the cold and flu seasons.
Other benefits include:
Reducing blood sugar; anti-mutagenic and anti-cancer properties. Thanks to its phytoestrogenic properties – the tea naturally supports the hormonal balance. There are so many benefits of drinking tea; however, keep in mind that some teas like black tea contain caffeine. Luckily honeybush is not one of them, which makes it suitable for frequent use. It is perfect for your night cup of tea before going to bed.
