New Covid-19 waves? The world is facing COVID-19, the most deadly pandemic we could hardly imagine. Many countries are slowly reopening business and things are looking quite promising. People are tired of restrictions and SARS-coV-2 is pushing their limits to the extreme. The home office challenge and the online education problems are about to go in history. However, as we take in fresh air, new COVID-19 waves are already hitting.
It looks like the U.S.A and India are the most struggling areas, and the battle isn’t over. With a total count of 13,5 million cases, compared to American 31,1 million, Delhi’s climbing up the statistics. Though the numbers aren’t very disturbing, a few studies are pointing out that the data actually are not as officially announced by the authorities.
According to that information, we’re talking about a total amount of 400 million cases, which is more than the first peak of the country. Reaching its outbreak last September, it then began a steady decline, but emerged again in March. So far, more than 100 million doses of vaccines have been administered, mostly to over-60s and frontline workers.
While Indians are fighting their second wave, Americans are already in the middle of their fourth one. With an average of over 63,000 on a daily basis, it seems hospitalizations and deaths rates are increasing.
Over 73 % of the adult population received at least one dose of the vaccine, the U.S.A. and India don’t appear to have any similarities. Still the results say only 5 states show a decrease in new cases, compared to 25 that are really dealing with the issue.
The threat of a fourth wave comes as many states have loosened their restrictions and lifted guards up. Though a 2-month decline, Dr Rochelle Walensky, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director warned over staying aware.
Joe Biden also urged on
… every governor, mayor and local leader to maintain and reinstate the mask mandate.
The Maha Kumbh Mela festival made thousands of maskless Hindu devotees gather on the banks of the Ganges river. While the health experts called for celebrations cancellation, police were left powerless. The crowd lacked any COVID-19 safe behavior, avoided social distancing of any kind, and preventing measures were impossible.
So, COVID-19 is going to be a long-term enemy, and possible new waves may come. Though they’re different from the old ones, we have to stop underestimating them, if we want the restrictions to be over. While the vaccines and masks can’t offer 100 % protection, it’s up to us to participate as responsible, reasonable citizens.
